Small Ball?
Hard to get up early enough to beat Michelle Malkin to the punch. I’ve been thinking about a post on the grandiose plans for the In-O-guration for some time, and thought today might be the time after hearing a radio report on all the trouble the District government is being put through to deal with crowds that could top 5 million.
The Divine Ms. M points out that the protesters who called for George Bush to scale back his Inaugural in 2005 at a time of war and in the wake of the tsunami disaster are nowhere to be seen this year.
It’s a good point, given the tidal wave of hype welling up over The One’s coming coronation.
Not a day goes by here in the capital region without a story about hotels filled up even in surrounding states, $3000-a-night apartment rentals, public transportation and security travails, hot tickets, and the plethora of balls.
But to borrow a term from baseball, has there ever been a year when “small ball” — scaling back both the partying and the Big Event — would be more appropriate?
I know something about this, having worked for the Inaugural Committee in 1984-5 — the year the whole thing was frozen out by sub-zero temperatures. I was slated to lead the Supreme Court onto the inaugural stand, and as a souvenir, got one of the flags that was supposed to lead the Parade That Wasn’t.
But I never regretted it for a minute because of the power of the minimal moment. President Reagan and Vice President Bush took the oath of office in a subdued, tasteful ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda with a relative handful of privileged dignitaries present, and the Gipper gave his speech right there.
It was the kind of ceremony fitting for a Republic, rather than a monarchy.
It’s wishful thinking to imagine, given that we are all “living history” (what — those of us who made it through the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s didn’t live through any “history?”), that the Obamites would for a moment consider a scaled-back affair.
Hold back on the literally billions of dollars that will be spent on the hooplah before all is said and done because unemployment is rising, whole industries like autos and retailing are cratering and people are pinching pennies like there is no tomorrow?
Let them eat bailouts.
