I Can’t Gitmo Satisfaction
Bad first step for the O-ministration — calling for the immediate suspension of military tribunals at Gitmo.
According to the Washington Post:
Pretrial hearings for five 9/11 defendants, including Khalid Sheik Mohammed, were scheduled to resume Wednesday. Three of the five are representing themselves, and it is unclear whether they will agree to the delay or oppose it. A hearing is set for 10:30 a.m.
The administration’s instruction came in a motion filed with the military court in the case Mohammed and four others accused of organizing the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. The motion called for “a continuance of the proceedings” until May 20 so that “the newly inaugurated president and his administration [can] review the military commissions process, generally, and the cases currently pending before military commissions, specifically” ….
The motion prompted a clear sense of disappointment among some of the military officials here who had tried to make a success of the system, despite charges that the military tribunals were a legal netherworld. Military prosecutors and other commission officials here were told not to speak to the news media, according to a Pentagon official.
“It’s over; I don’t want to say any more,” said one official involved in the process.
Way to go, Barry O. In one fell swoop, you’ve completed a three-fer:
1. You’ve dragged out and possibly endangered the prosecution of the most dangerous criminal mastermind ever encountered by the United States — or perhaps worse yet, possibly set up a global propaganda platform for him and his fellow murderers.
2. You’ve damaged the morale of the military prosecutors who have been working for years to carry out that prosecution.
3. You’ve conclusively demonstrated to the world that you will put PR considerations above the safety and security of the American people.
“You cannot outlast us.” Really? It only took one day.
UPDATE: Ed Morrissey at HotAir is wondering why the O-Ring didn’t have a handle on this from the outset, pointing out:
In the end, Gitmo really is two problems: location and process. If the process gets changed, then there’s no reason to change location. If the location was all that was at issue, then the process doesn’t matter. These terrorists have to remain detained to keep Americans from getting killed, especially KSM and the 9/11 plotters. Their guilt is not in doubt, nor is the danger they represent.
