Roberts Flunks “Idol” Test
Those who faithfully watch American Idol (and I admit to peeking in in recent seasons as the field narrowed) know that Simon Cowell has one non-negotiable rule: you cannot forget the words.
I hope the harsh British wasn’t watching his real-world counterpart, Chief Justice John Roberts, stumble through the administration of a 35-word constitutionally mandated oath to Barry O on Tuesday. (A contretemps that, as featured on Hot Air, had Fox’s Chris Wallace wondering whether Obama had actually been officially sworn in.)
The Chief Justice should know as well as anyone that this set of Supremes does not get all that much air time, and you can’t afford to get a brain cramp in front of a global audience of hundreds of millions of people.
And the simple truth is that the #1 judge has an advantage the Idol contestants don’t: he’s allowed to bring a cheat sheet. (He could even have had the oath roll across the teleprompter.)
An advantage of which the world hopes he will avail himself in future Inaugurals. As a professional speechwriter and coach, I can tell da Judge and others who may find themselves in his position: never leave these things to chance. Memorizing speeches is an open invitation to Murphy’s Law. (The corollary of which for public speakers will now be renamed Roberts’ Rule …)
UPDATE: Apparently there is more at stake here than I even imagined.
ADDITIONAL UPDATE: The Chief made his way to the White House to give O a do-over. Thank goodness.

Ha. I did love Obama’s reaction. O’Reilly will have to do a body language segment on it.
And of course, now we know that he ended up with a re-do.. but neglected to get video… so there’s STILL no proof. What a comedy of errors…
